Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog series, “Reinventing Our Rooms: A Decluttering and Redecorating Adventure”. This project was a significant endeavor, which initially appeared quite daunting. However, my reliable planner system, the “Hustle Sanely Peacefully Productive Planner,” gave me the structure required to strategize and handle a project of this size. By using my planner, I could segment this intimidating goal into manageable tasks, providing myself with a roadmap on where to start and how to maintain progress.
The Inspiration Behind the Reinventing Our Rooms Series
For quite some time now, I’ve been amassing a collection of Pinterest pins. These pins are not just ordinary ones, they represent rooms and houses that have captured my attention and imagination with their unique color palettes and aesthetic styles. Each pin tells a story, and each room whispers a secret of design and decor that resonates with my sense of style. This collection of pins has been a source of inspiration, fueling my desire to transform my own living space.
However, it was only after reading “Love the Home You Have” by Melissa Michaels, that I truly felt compelled to translate this digital inspiration into reality. This insightful book ignited a spark within me, reminding me of the importance of cherishing and nurturing the spaces we inhabit. It reiterated the fact that our homes are not just physical structures, but spaces filled with memories, emotions, and experiences.
Motivated by this newfound understanding, I decided it was high time to put these Pinterest pins into tangible action. I wanted to create a space that reflected my personality, my tastes, and my love for design. And so, the idea for the Reinventing Our Rooms series was born. This series is not just about redecorating or remodeling, but about reimagining our spaces, infusing them with love, warmth, and a touch of personal style. It’s about transforming our homes into spaces that not only look good but also feel good, creating an environment that truly feels like home.
The Need for a Comfortable and Functional Rooms
As a mother who has currently chosen the path of homeschooling, I found myself faced with the stark reality of how crucial it was for our living space to not just be comfortable, but also highly functional and enjoyable. It wasn’t just about having a home; it was about fostering a learning environment that would nurture our children’s curiosity and passion for knowledge.
This series that I’ve embarked on, is essentially a chronicle of our journey to transform our current house into something that feels much more like our dream home, even though it may not be the house we spend the rest of our lives in. It’s about making the best of what we have, about finding joy and satisfaction in the present, despite its imperfections and limitations.
I strongly believe that many of you out there may find yourselves in a similar situation, grappling with the same challenges and sharing the same aspirations. And I hope that by sharing our journey, we can create a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding, and perhaps even inspire some of you to embark on your journey of transformation.
Our Plan and Budget
We’re in the process of meticulously planning, intending to execute this project on a restricted budget. For the Reinventing Our Rooms series we’re putting a heavy emphasis on maximizing the use of materials and resources that we currently have at our disposal before we even begin to contemplate the possibility of purchasing items that are either new or second-hand. The various rooms and areas within our home will be strategically addressed in three distinct sections. These sections will be prioritized based on the degree of attention that they require, with those needing the most urgent care and renovation being tackled first.
The First Phase: Tackling Stressful Areas
To begin with, my primary focus will be on those aspects of my home that are currently the sources of my greatest stress. These troublesome areas consist of several key locations within the house. Firstly, there is my daughters’ room, which is in desperate need of attention and organization. The master closet is another area that has become a concern, as it has become cluttered and disorganized over time. Finally, our living room and dining room area, which currently serves as a makeshift playroom for our daughters, is also on my list to address. This particular area is a multifunctional space that requires a careful balance to maintain both its utility for our children and its role within our overall living space.
The Second Phase: Redecorating and Organizing
Moving forward, I’ll be turning my attention to several spaces within our home that require a bit more creativity when it comes to their aesthetic appeal and functionality. The areas on my list that need this sort of reimagining include our Master bathroom, along with its accompanying closet space, our culinary hub – the Kitchen, the pantry where we store our food items, our laundry room that could use some organization for efficiency, and the secondary bathroom.
The Final Phase: Overcoming Procrastination
Finally, I will confront the areas that I have been putting off for a while. This includes our multipurpose office and craft room, which has become a bit of a catch-all space for miscellaneous items and needs a proper organization system in place. Next, I will sort through my husband’s and my shared bedroom and closet space. It’s been a while since we’ve gone through this closet, and it is way overdue. Last but not least, I will tackle our garage. It’s easy to let a garage become a dumping ground for items we don’t use daily, but I’m determined to transform it into a more useful, functional space.
Here, I’ll provide a link to my continuously expanding list of decluttering essentials. These are all products I’ve bought either during this project (like vacuum seal bags), or items that I’ve acquired over the past few years.
Reflection on Past Decluttering Experiences
Over the past year, I embarked on a significant journey, one that aimed at decluttering and meticulously sorting through the multitude of items we, as a household, have accumulated over the years. The accumulation of these items was a natural consequence of several relocations we experienced in our lives. Through time, we’ve unwittingly gathered a vast array of items, some of which still hold value and serve a purpose in our lives, while many others, unfortunately, merely occupy valuable space without any significant use.
Last year, during a comprehensive and exhaustive decluttering phase, I found myself discarding over 20 trash bags filled to the brim with clothes. These were items of clothing I had been clinging onto for over a decade, stored away in the recesses of our home, forgotten and unused. It was a moment of revelation about how much unnecessary stuff we had been hoarding.
As I prepare to embark on this decluttering journey once more, I am filled with a sense of optimism. I anticipate that there will be less to sort through this time around, given the extensive purge from last year. However, I stand ready and prepared to tackle any surprises that may surface, armed with the experience from my previous decluttering endeavor. I am hopeful that this process will be a further step in the direction of minimizing unnecessary clutter and conscious consumption.
